Darius

Emperor living at the time of Exile and Return

Darius, as mentioned in the Bible, refers to several individuals, but the most prominent figure is Darius the Great, the Persian emperor who reigned during the time of the Exile and Return of the Jewish people. Darius the Great is known for his decree allowing the Jews to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.

In the book of Ezra, Darius is mentioned in several passages:

1. Ezra 4:5 – They bribed officials to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.
2. Ezra 4:24 – Thus the work on the house of God in Jerusalem came to a standstill until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
3. Ezra 5:5-7 – These verses recount the letter that was sent to Darius regarding the rebuilding of the temple.
4. Ezra 6:1, 12-15 – Darius’ decree to resume the temple construction and the successful completion of the temple.

Darius is also mentioned in the books of Haggai and Zechariah:

1. Haggai 1:1 – In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest.
2. Haggai 1:15 – On the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month of the second year of King Darius.
3. Haggai 2:10 – On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Haggai.
4. Zechariah 1:1, 7 – In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo… On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berekiah, the son of Iddo.

Darius played a significant role in the history of the Jewish people, particularly in allowing them to rebuild the temple and restore their worship practices. As a biblical, we see the hand of God at work through Darius, using him to fulfill His purposes and bring about the restoration of His people.
