Adoption as Children of God

  • Romans 8:15 – “The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.'”
  • Galatians 4:5 – “To redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.”
  • Ephesians 1:5 – “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.”

Believers as Children of God

  • John 1:12 – “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.”
  • 1 John 3:1 – “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
  • Galatians 3:26 – “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.”

Relationship with God as Father

  • Galatians 4:6 – “Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.'”
  • John 14:18 – “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
  • 2 Corinthians 6:18 – “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

God’s Care for the Fatherless

  • Psalm 68:5 – “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.”
  • Isaiah 43:6 – “I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’ Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth.”
  • Psalm 27:10 – “Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me.”

 Adoption Through Christ

  • Romans 8:14 – “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.”
  • 1 Peter 1:3 – “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”
  • Hosea 11:1 – “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.”

God’s Promise of Adoption

  • Romans 8:23 – “Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.”
  • Romans 9:8 – “In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.”
  • Jeremiah 3:19 – “I myself said, ‘How gladly would I treat you like my children and give you a pleasant land, the most beautiful inheritance of any nation.’ I thought you would call me ‘Father’ and not turn away from following me.”

God’s Fatherhood

  • Matthew 23:9 – “And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father, and he is in heaven.”
  • Isaiah 64:8 – “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
  • Romans 8:21 – “That the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.”

Caring for the Fatherless

  • James 1:27 – “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
  • Psalm 10:14 – “But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.”
  • Isaiah 43:1 – “But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.'”

God’s Plan and Purpose
