Dan was one of the twelve sons of Jacob, also known as Israel, and the firstborn son of Bilhah, Rachel’s maidservant (Genesis 30:6). He was the brother of Naphtali and the half-brother of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Dinah, Joseph, and Benjamin (Genesis 30; 35:18). Dan was the father of Hushim (Genesis 46:23). He was the ancestral head of the tribe of Dan, one of the twelve tribes of Israel (Genesis 49:16; 1 Chronicles 2:2).
