What was Haran in the Bible?

Home of Terah

Haran is a significant location mentioned in the Bible, primarily in the Old Testament. Haran was a city located in ancient Mesopotamia, near the modern-day border of Turkey and Syria. The name Haran means parched or dry, signifying the arid climate of the region. The first mention of Haran in the Bible is in Genesis 11:31, where it is noted that Terah, the father of Abraham, took his family, including his son Abram (later known as Abraham), his grandson Lot, and his daughter-in-law Sarai (later known as Sarah), and set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. However, they settled in Haran and lived there for a time. This delay in reaching Canaan was significant in God’s plan for Abraham and his descendants. Haran is also mentioned in Acts 7:2-4, where Stephen, in his defense before the Sanhedrin, recounts the story of Abraham. He mentions that God appeared to Abraham in Mesopotamia before he lived in Haran and directed him to leave his country and relatives to go to the land that God would show him. This event marked the beginning of God’s covenant with Abraham and his descendants.\
