Hate Towards Others:

  • Matthew 5:44: “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”
  • Proverbs 15:18: “A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel.”
  • 1 John 4:20: “Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen.”

Consequences of Hate:

  • Proverbs 26:24-25: “Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart.”

Overcoming Hate with Love:

Avoiding Hate:

  • Proverbs 19:11: “A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.”

Things the Lord Hates:

  • Proverbs 6:16-19: “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”
  • Psalm 11:5: “The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.”
  • Psalm 45:7: “You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore, God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

Opposite of Hate: Things the Lord Loves:

  • Deuteronomy 4:31: “For the Lord your God is a compassionate God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.”
  • Psalm 33:5: “The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.”
  • Psalm 37:28: “The Lord loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. Wrongdoers will be completely destroyed; the offspring of the wicked will perish.”
  • Psalm 86:15: “But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”
  • Romans 8:38-39: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
